Maureen Jonker explores the possibilities of arranging the human body in ever-changing spaces and situations. This interest stems from a sport she has practiced for several years – synchronized swimming. Direct references to synchronized swimming do not lie on the surface of her work. The underlying motive, however, is almost always stimulated by the urge to create choreographies.
The scope of her work revolves around placing the human body within self-created settings, which she calls scenarios. These scenarios can be both material and immaterial. They consist of materials such as wood, cardboard, and canvas, but are also formed through the frames of choreography, the visitors, and the placement of installation parts. Stamina and the proportions of the human body play an important role within the immaterial scenarios. The question arises whether the human body shapes itself according to these scenarios, or whether the scenarios are formed around the human body.

Maureen Jonker onderzoekt de mogelijkheden tot het arrangeren van het menselijk lichaam in steeds nieuwe ruimtes en situaties. Deze interesse is ontstaan vanuit synchroonzwemmen, een sport die zij een aantal jaar heeft beoefend. Hoewel directe verwijzingen naar deze sport vrijwel ontbreken, vormt de drang om choreografieën te schrijven een onderliggend motief in haar werk.
In haar werk plaatst zij het menselijk lichaam binnenin zelfgemaakte ruimtes, die zij scenario’s noemt. Deze scenario’s kunnen zowel materieel als immaterieel zijn. Ze bestaan uit materialen (hout, (golf)karton en katoencanvas), maar worden ook gevormd door de kadering (publiek, plaatsing van installatieonderdelen) van een choreografie. Binnen deze scenario’s geldt de vraag of het menselijk lichaam zich naar de ruimte vormt, of dat de ruimte juist om het lichaam wordt vormgegeven.
